A double blind, multicentred, comparator controlled clinical study has been conducted in Germany comparing the safety and efficacy of pentosan polysulfate sodium (marketed as Cartrophen Vet) to carprofen (marketed as  Rimadyl) for the treatment of osteoarthritis in the canine . The findings of this study were presented in poster format at the Sixth World Congress of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) - Washington USA 30 September - 3 October 2001 and published in OARSI's journal, "Osteoarthritis and Cartilage" Volume 9, Supplement B, S21-S22.

Australia

On reviewing the results of the clinical trial, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) concluded:

“clear effect of the drug and close similarity to the magnitude of effect of carprofen, exceeding the activity of carprofen for a number of measures and outlasting the effect of carprofen for several measures”.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) reviewed the clinical trial and concluded:

“The clinical field trial was comprehensive, detailed and well controlled.  The outcome was statistically convincing for both treatment regimens and confirmed therapeutic equivalence of the NaPPS (pentosan polysulfate sodium) with the comparator market standard NSAID.”

“In clinical trial the product has shown good effects in dogs in alleviating the lameness and pain and loss of movement associated with osteoarthritis.  The results of the comprehensive clinical trial have confirmed that the active substance has a different mode of action to NSAIDs, including a slightly slower onset of ameliorating effects but longer persistence of these after the recommended four week course of treatment.”

Sweden

The Medical Products Agency of Sweden included in their "overall conclusion on the medicinal product" that:

“both treatments gave equal improvement" (pentosan polysulfate sodium and carprofen).
